Tourism Minister visited INS Kurusura Submarine Museum.

The Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Thiru S.P.Shanmuganathan Visit INS Kurusura Submarine Museum, Visakhapatnam on the instructions of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu 

    Under the orders of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Puratchi Thalaivi Amma, the Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Minister for Tourism S.P.Shunmuganathan and Principal Secretary, Tourism, Dr.R.Kannan on (04.09.2013) Wednesday visited the Kurusura Submarine Museum on the Beach Road here. The visit was made to learn from the experience of setting up the submarine museum, as Tamil Nadu is also coming up with a submarine museum at Mahabalipuram.

   The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation had taken delivery of a decommissioned submarine ex INS VAGLI and it was to be converted into a museum, Mr.Shanmuganathan said.





    In order to use the learning curve to do things better and quicker, this visit was made. The Hon’ble Minister and the Principal Secretary later visited the National Maritime Museum on the Beach Road.

   An Officer in the Indian Navy Commander N.Rajesh and Curator Phaniraj explained the history of the submarine and how it was hauled up the shore to make it a major tourist attraction in Visakhapatnam. Secretary of VUDA G.C.Kishore Kumar, who accompanied the Minister and the official, said VUDA would share its experience with Tamil Nadu Government. VUDA maintains the submarine museum with technical support from the Eastern Naval Command.

    The Kalvari class submarine Indian Museum Ship Kurusura was decommissioned in 2001 and was hauled up the shore in a joint venture between Indian Navy and National Ship Design Research Centre. The museum was inaugurated in 2002.
